The Dream Project: 1999-2003.  Artist Beth Griffin documents dreams through nightly drawings, a book, audio, and paintings.

Beth Griffin is a New York City based artist, originally from South Carolina.

Summary of Presentation

In this event, I will present slides of a dream documentation project I began in 1999.  The images will include selections from over 400 dream drawings, paintings, book, and audio.  I’ll discuss the creative process, how nightly dream drawings improved my spatial perception and hand-eye coordination, and how my findings, as an artist, compared to psychiatrists and psychologists who study dreams.

Learning Objectives:

1.      how dreams can improve hand-eye coordination, what makes up a powerful dream image, how dreams can provide a creative outlet for post traumatic stress.

Evaluation questions:

Abstract

In the spring of 1999, I began extensive documentation of my dreams.  The project consists of over 400 drawings that combine text with images. (All drawings are 16” x 20,” pencil on museum board, drawn in complete nighttime darkness, without glasses (my uncorrected vision is 20/450, or legally blind.))  Every night I have a dream is a 473-page transcription of these seemingly indecipherable drawings.  The book is separated into monthly chapters and indexed by topics and characters.  Semiconscious nocturnal audio recordings recount dream lines and accompany the drawings and book.  Visual, literal and audio works lead to paintings as the final means of expression.  The series of 32” x 40” oil paintings, selected from the year’s most powerful dream images, is in progress.  Fourteen paintings are finished, and the final project will conclude with 20 to 25 paintings.  Each canvas can be cross-referenced to specific drawings and correlating book pages, providing context for the painted image. .
