Abstract

A third of our life we spend sleeping - that seems to be a long time of unproductivity. While sleeping our sensory input is shut down and we are in a state of bodily rest. But this external inactivity is accompanied by a highly active brain. What happens, when we leave this world of conscious being? We all have to sleep, but we don’t know, which world we are entering, when we are sleeping and why we have to do that. The next morning, our senses are sharpened, we are refreshed and „ready to go“ again. How does sleep accomplish this?

Our TV documentary presents the opinions of the expert of the field to the topic described above. People, who are „sleepless“ let us know, what that means for them and how they try to cope and what kind of sleep related difficulties we know.

We used animation and computer animation techniques to picture the states and used classical archive material to allow for an impression about sleep research and sleep medicine.

Our interview partners concerning sleep research are the internationally renowned experts in the field, from the US, Israel, Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The representatives of sleep medicine had to be solely from Austria, since this production was originally designed for an Austrian population.
