I have been an ASD member since 1998 and I am the co-host of this conference. I received my MA in Consciousness Studies with a concentration in Dream Studies from JFKU in June 1999. Since January 2001, I have been a research assistant with Dr. Fariba Bogzaran at JFKU.

Summary of Presentation

This workshop focuses on the idea that artistic self-expression fosters a more complete view of the self and the world through the dream. Participants will be guided in creating a collage with magazine cuttings, drawing and fabric cuttings of their own design on to poster board or t-shirts. No art experience necessary. Materials provided.

Learning Objectives.

1) explore collage as a way to interact with their dream content;
2) examine the subconscious material that presents itself as a result of the act of art making; and
3) discover the rich group experience of sharing dream collage in a group.

Abstract

As dream conferences tend to address more directly issues of the mind and emotional self, this workshop aims to attend to the participants’ need for artistic expression.

As dreaming is essentially a creative act, this workshop is designed to give conference participants an opportunity to explore their dreams through artmaking. The workshop leader will encourage and maintain an atmosphere of non-judgment and spontaneous, joyful creation. This creative journey will allow participants to connect with their subconscious material in a hands-on experience and gain unexpected insights through the playful act of artmaking. Individuals will be guided to work with the transformations of their dream images into artwork in order to deepen their understanding of their dreams. At the end of the workshop, participants will have a creative image(s) they can take with them that will yield more insights if reflected on at a later date.

The format of the workshop will be: 1) Participants will be introduced to the art of collage on poster board and/or t-shirt 2) They will collect the materials that they feel drawn to working with 3) They will create their individual collages 4) They will present their collage to the group (if they feel comfortable doing so) 5) They will be invited to wear (t-shirt) or display their art (poster board) in the conference on-site gallery.
