ABSTRACT Dreams of German and American College Students in the 1990’s G. William Domhoff and Katrin Meyer, Domhoff is a Research Professor and the author most recently of The Scientific Study of Dreams: Neural networks, Cognitive Development, and Content Analysis (American Psychological Association press, 2003). Meyer is a graduate of Goettingen University in Germany and a postgraduate researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Summary of Presentation This paper presents the results of a Hall/Van de Castle content analysis
comparing dream reports from German and American college students in the late
1990s. The results for the two groups are similar for both women and men,
again suggesting that dreams are more similar than different cross-nationally
and cross-culturally. The objectives are to demonstrate the Hall/Van de Castle method of content analysis, update findings on the dreams of college students, and contribute to he literature on dream meaning. Participants should be able to answer (1) what are the basics of the Hall/Van de Castle coding system? (2) how do the dreams of college men and women differ? And (3) how are the dreams of Germans and Americans similar and different? Abstract This study compares the content in dream reports collected from male and female German and American college students in the late 1990s. It shows the content is very similar using key hall/Van de Castle categories. It also compares the finding with the normative findings with past American dream samples, revealing considerable historical continuity. The findings fit with the literature suggesting that dream content around the world is more similar than different, supporting the idea that dreams primarily reflect personal concerns revolving around family, lovers, friends, and co-workers.
