Dreaming by the Bay

                     June 24–28, 2005

at the Doubletree Hotel in Berkeley, California

See our web site for more information and e-mail submission forms!  www.asdreams.org/2005

VEnue:   The Conference will be held on the San Francisco Bay at the Doubletree Hotel at the Berkeley Marina. The hotel is in a beautiful quiet waterfront setting across the bay from the Golden Gate Bridge, and offers spectacular views of the bay and marina. The site offers a wildlife sanctuary, and large waterfront hiking, biking or kite flying park, plus three waterfront restaurants and ready access to Berkeley and the 4th street shops and restaurants. There is no charge for parking, and hotel facilities such as the pool and fitness center are complementary to the guests.  The San Francisco bay area is an ideal cool and sunny summer vacation spot, and with the 4th of July fireworks displays at the hotel location the weekend following the conference, it makes for a perfect time to stay and vacation in the bay area.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSION

SUBMISSION CATEGORIES:

TYPE 1 – PAPERS AND SYMPOSIA, PANEL DISCUSSIONS

A PAPER presents the work of an individual or group on a single, clearly defined topic. It is generally presented as an oral presentation of 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for questions and answers. All presentations are encouraged to be within this time limit, however if this is not appropriate to your talk, please indicate the time you require.  A SYMPOSIUM consists of a set of papers sharing a common theme and will generally include a discussant who comments on the papers.  A Symposia proposal may be submitted by a leader who organizes a group of papers under a common theme.  All other papers submissions will be organized into Symposia by the committee.  Symposia are allotted 1.5 to 2 hours of program time. A PANEL proposal is more informal than a symposium and involves a discussion of a theme and perhaps very short presentations, by several individuals with expertise on the topic under discussion. Panel discussions will be allotted one to two hours of program time.

TYPE 2 - WORKSHOPS

A WORKSHOP is an experiential presentation involving a practical demonstration of a technique or method for approaching dreams, usually including audience participation. Workshops will be allotted one to two hours of program time based on schedule constraints, presenter request and program committee decision.  There will be a limited number of workshop timeslots available so it is encouraged that if you propose a workshop, you also provide the option of presenting your work in a 30 to 60 minute presentation format.

TYPE 3 - SPECIAL EVENTS

The program committee also welcomes proposals for unusual, innovative, artistic and/or experimental presentations which do not fit into the other submission categories. In the past, these general events have included: films, videos and slide shows; dream theater; computer-oriented dreamwork; poetry; and music. Time allotment for these special events will vary according to the type of presentation.

TYPE 4 - RESEARCH BRIEFS and POSTER SESSIONS.  POSTER SESSIONS are special presentations of research or theory that are posted on easels in display areas during special times designated for viewing and discussion.  Poster Sessions and RESEARCH BRIEFS may be organized into one or more "Hot-off-the-Press" sessions, during which individuals will be given ten to fifteen minutes to present recent research findings.

SUBMISSION DEADLINES:

TYPE 1,2 3 – Final deadline to receive proposals for Papers, Symposia, Panel Discussions, Workshops and Special Events is December 31, 2005.

TYPE 4 - the final deadline for Poster Session Research Briefs and Hot off the Press submissions is March 1, 2005

Each submission MUST include ALL of the following information in the numbered headings below.  All Submissions MUST include a return e-mail address (and second backup e-mail address if possible) for confirmation, notification and program updates.  Please use Microsoft Word, or plain text format.  Adobe PDF is an acceptable alternative but not desirable due to editing limitations.   Please include ALL the requested information in each proposal, ONE DOCUMENT PER PROPOSAL.  DO NOT combine multiple proposals in the single document and DO NOT EXCLUDE information even if you provided it in a prior document.  Incomplete submissions will NOT be accepted.   A blank set of instructions, that can be used as a template, may be downloaded from the ASD Website at: http://www.asdreams.org/2005

1. SUBMITTER’S NAME AND DESIGNATION:  Please put your name and any  appropriate educational or professional designations, just as you wish them to appear in the program.  We will not extract anything different from your vitae’s.  This should be the name of the primary presenter or symposium or panel leader as the case may be.

For a pre-organized Symposia or Panel Discussion proposal, the summary should reflect the theme and content, rather than the individual presentations.

AUDIO-VISUAL AIDS.  Specify your AV needs and limit AV requests to what is absolutely necessary for your presentation.  Be specific about supporting equipment needs including: projection systems, flip charts or white boards, audio and video systems in your description.  High cost may preclude a PC projector setup for all cases, so please prepare overhead foils as backup media for any such presentation.  PCs may not be available so be prepared to bring a laptop if you are notified that a PC projector is available for your talk.  Video will be limited, but if you do require it, please state the format (VCR or DVD) and (NTSC or PAL).  If you need a sound system to play audio then state CD or Tape.  Microphones may not be provided in smaller rooms.   Final AV request deadline is December 31, 2005 with this submission.  There will be NO changes after that date.

SPACE SETUP RESTRICTIONS.  Rooms will typically be set up for in theatre or classroom style for presentations, and a more circular setup for workshops.  Please state your space setup requirements.  We will try to accommodate your request to the degree that scheduling permits.  If you do not specify a setup then no change will be possible later once the rooms are designated.

11. LINGUISTIC RESTRICTIONS. 16. b) specific details of training (date, institutions, teachers) they have received in dreamwork or dream studies;

c) the nature and extent of the workshop leaders’ prior experience conducting dream workshops;

The ASD ethical statement emphasizes non-intrusiveness and respect for the dreamer’s dignity and integrity. Please note that due to the short format of conference workshops, proposals should reflect ethical, non-intrusive goals and methods and should not make unrealistic claims. A copy of the ASD ethical statement may be obtained from the ASD Central Office or from this ASD Website.
