PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Hello again,

This is a particularly exciting month for IASD, because we have several scheduled events guaranteed to fulfill your desire to share your dreams on a personal basis.

First, the folks in the Los Angeles area have scheduled another exciting Southern California regional event at Marymount College on Saturday, September 17th. The theme is Dreams in a Changing World, and keynote speaker Jeremy Taylor will offer his perspective on the value of working with dreams in the midst of collective transformation. You can find the details here: http://tinyurl.com/42bxeum

Not everyone can make it to our annual conferences, and regional events are not always close by, but there is one event that everyone can attend, wherever you live and whatever you are wearing (they advertise that you can attend in your pajamas). That is the increasingly popular PsiberDreaming Conference, which is highlighting lucid dreaming this year. If you become a new IASD member now, you can attend free! Check it out at http://asdreams.org/psi2011/

We all enjoy sharing our dreams with others. The PsiberDreaming Conference only lasts two weeks, and conferences and regional meetings are not available to everyone. In my acceptance speech at the Rolduc conference, I commented on how important the small intimate dream group has been to me. It is through the little dream group that many of us got our first taste of the richness of the dream. These groups can let you enjoy the benefits of sharing when and where you and your dream friends choose. If you don’t have a dream group where you are, I encourage you to start one. It is not as difficult as you may think. I will be glad to help guide you through the process of establishing a safe, friendly environment in which to share your dreams with others along IASD ethical guidelines.

Please write to me if you are interested in starting your own group or if you have any thoughts and ideas on other ways IASD may serve the dream: roberto@asdreams.org

Thank you for sharing our collective dream and thanks to all of those who contributed to the Facebook group “Goodnight Irene – Dream the Storm out to Sea.” Because of your collective dreams, Hurricane Irene, although creating much havoc for many in the eastern US, mellowed considerably and resulted in much less damage than predicted.

Wishing you the best of dreams,
Robert P. Gongloff
IASD President

LAVENDER ~ An Entwined Adventure in Science and Spirit
by Judy B. Gardiner

Following the quest of Penelope, an unexpected vehicle for higher truths, LAVENDER engages the reader in decoding dream-encrypted metaphors and clues to a monolithic puzzle. In an unfolding process that realizes the transformational features of one’s destiny, the underlying theme gives us a choice between healing the planet or ignoring Penelope’s message to our potential demise. Findings otherwise unseen by the waking eye demonstrate that innate knowledge guided by spirituality has the potential to reveal science. A synthesis of timelessness, psychic phenomena, historical figures, quantum features, faith and geological findings, this riveting narrative winds around a mysterious exploration in dreaming and waking consciousness, venturing a deep look into the collective unconscious. LAVENDER is neither science fiction nor earthbound whodunit, but a Who Sent It cosmological conundrum.

RESEARCH COMMITTEE NEWS

Have you checked out the supplemental issue of the International Journal of Dream Research at www.ijodr.org ? The Rolduc conference abstracts have been published! Meanwhile, we are already making the 2012 Berkeley conference happen. Researcher Tracey Kahan, Ph.D., has graciously accepted our invitation as keynote. Research conducted by Dr. Kahan and her colleagues has shown that waking and dreaming, especially REM dreaming, are more similar than different in the occurrence of metacognitive skills such as reflective self-awareness, intentionality, and self-regulation. Personally, I'm very much looking forward to this talk.

If you are interested in becoming a research committee member or want to help in planning the research track in next year’s conference, please, contact Katja at katval@utu.fi

A SHAMANIC DREAM

Ordinarily the Dream News does not publish individual dreams. But we thought you would enjoy the following from Ann Sayre Wiseman. It illustrates the tremendous generosity of IASD members and how a life-long dream can be made real. The following is her story.
Editor

While in Holland last month attending the international conference of the study of dreams, I joined the Shamanic Dream Workshop where we were invited to close our eyes and create a special dream and then draw the picture that came to mind.

I saw myself in Italy looking out the casement window of a castle I had visited when I was 19. Waiting out on the lawn was a colorful Air Balloon with a guide standing in the basket waiting to carry me over the hills of Tuscany. As I looked down on the little Italian villages I saw below me the island of Venice. I'd been there as an art student, and a second visit at 45 as a romantic partner. I have never been in Venice alone, long enough to paint the charming canals and gondoliers. My balloon guide dropped me down on the Piazza San Marco so I could paint in Venice for a week. Yes, it was an old dream that would probably not come true this late in my life, as it was the week of my 85th birthday.

At the conference lunch we were sharing our shamanic dream illustrations. After telling my story, the woman sitting next to me said "I live in Venice, you can stay with me, I am at work all day, but I can give you a key."

Well, dear dreamers, I have just returned from a realized shamanic dream; a week in Cinzia's comfortable apartment overlooking the Grand Canal. The Grand Canal is a highway for all kinds of ferry boats, garbage boats, cargo boats, gondolas full of tourists or lovers, which pass back and forth all day. With my week-long Vaporeto ferry pass I could hop on and off these ferries at any stop to see the museums, the piazzas, the churches, and markets. I passed under and walked over many famous bridges. I sketched the Rialto Fish market, the tourists in San Marco, and the painted houses on the island of Burano. This shamanic dream week gave me sketches for paintings and the belief in the power of dreams at age 85.

BOGZARAN & BOSNAK TO KEYNOTE PSIBERDREAMING 2011

Two of IASD's most respected dream experts will Keynote this year's PsiberDreaming Conference, scheduled to begin on Sunday, September 25 and run online for two weeks.

The PsiberDreaming Conference, celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, attracts a global audience which, along with presentations, special events, psi dreaming contests, and an outstanding gallery of dream art, makes this conference one of the most popular events of the year's dream calendar.

IASD WELCOMES NEW MEMBERSHIP CHAIR

In the next few months, I will be turning over the Membership Chair duties to Jennifer Parker from Somerset, England. “Jenny” is currently a member of the board, and a senior lecturer in Consciousness Studies and the Psychology of Addiction at the University of the West of England. Speaking of her research agenda, she says, “I am very interested in the impact of culture on dream content and beliefs about the function of dreams. I have conducted research looking at men's and women's dream report content in the UK and have proposed an alternative research approach to traditional content analytic studies.” Jenny is currently researching women's nightmares. Her research focus is on the identification of different types of dreams, and exploration of these narratives.

As Jenny assumes the position of chair of the membership committee, I will be shifting my attention to my duties as vice president and chair of the nominating committee. -- Scott Sparrow
