THE STREETS OF DREAMING – PIEDMONT, ITALY

In the medieval town of Costigliole Saluzzo, at the foot of the Alps in Piedmont, Italy, the initiative “The Streets of Dreaming” is taking place. The goal of the promoters is to transform the small town into an open-eyed dream: school children, elderly people, all citizens are building dream catchers that will be displayed on the streets. Writers have created dream-related stories. And on the 20th of May, with the help of musicians, storytellers and peddlers, everybody will dream and imagine how to further transform and improve the beautiful town. Because, in the words of the promoters, “dreaming is the first step to concrete changes.” Massimo Schinco discovered this notable initiative, which fully reflects the IASD spirit and has received IASD’s support. The IASD logo will be on the online advertising of the event, and its flyers and brochures will be at the public’s disposal.

Film Focuses on Dream Circle
On April 23, San Jordi’s Day, Joaquin Oristrell started shooting his next film, a comedy, which focuses on a dream circle, provisionally entitled “Volare” . Jordi Borràs has collaborated in writing the script with Yolanda García Serrano and Oristrell.

Among the protagonists there are well-known faces in Catalonia such as Joel Joan, Úrsula Corberó, Ramon Madaula, Carmen Balagué, Marina Gatell, Dolo Beltran and others. The dream circle involves a group of people who gather together to share and explore their dreams, a scenario some IASDers know well! There will be some very special things happening in this Circle.

“Volare” invites everyone to integrate dreams in their daily life and we believe that when people view it they will have much fun.

Korea Welcomes Krippner
Dr. Stanley Krippner offered to come to Korea from May 25 through May 31, 2012 and lead dream groups, some in conjunction with his colleague Steve Pritzer, also representing IASD.

Three days of lectures and workshops, on the topics of Personal Mythology, Trauma and Nightmares, and Dreams and States of Consciousness, have been arranged through the Institute of Dreams and Mythology in Seoul, South Korea, headed by Dr. KohHea-Gyong.

Other presentations will be held at Yonsei University in classes for Logic and Creativity (Creativity and Dreams), Social Documentary (Trauma and Dreams of Vietnam Veterans) and Social Biography (Q & A about dreams).

“Boundaries in the Mind” Seminar in Milan, Italy

On April 14, the seminar “Boundaries in the Mind” led by Ernest Hartmann, M.D., was held in Milan, Italy at the invitation of the Milan Centre of Family Therapy, of which Dott. Massimo Schinco is co-director. In the morning Dr. Hartmann presented his theories and research on the subject of boundaries, the role of the central image in dreams, the hypothesis of the waking to dreaming continuum and the relationship of dreams to poetry and other arts. In the afternoon an intense exchange took place involving Ernest Hartmann, Massimo Schinco, the students and some faculty members of the Milan Centre’s School of Systemic Psychotherapy. They discussed and compared the basic assumptions of psychotherapy as practiced at the Milan Centre with those of Hartmann’s models of dreaming and mind. This seminar, attended by more than 200 participants, was a memorable event that demonstrates once more the capacity of IASD to create new connections between both people and institutions throughout the world. As a consequence of Hartmann’s visit, it has been decided to establish a permanent study group on dreaming and systemic family therapy at the Milan Centre.

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: DREAM SURVEY

I am conducting research trying to link dreaming, personality, art (poetry) and other important factors. You (anyone over 18) can help me by filling out a brief dream survey.

Thank you for your help,
Ernest Hartmann

SMART PHONE APPS FOR DREAMING: THE NEXT BIG THING !
Smart phone apps for dreaming are becoming quite popular and spreading rapidly. There are a few main categories of apps, most of which are either free or only a few dollars each. These main categories include binaural beat apps, hypnosis apps, educational or informational apps and apps that attempt to directly influence a dream while the dream is still in progress. Recently such apps have made news, including an April, 2012 report by FOX news about an app developed by Professor Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, southern England. This particular app is a large-scale experiment whereby results from users can be tracked and studied. The website is www.dreamonapp.com. Many other apps have unsubstantiated claims outside of user testimony. Whatever your opinion may be of these apps, with a substantial library of them available at a very low cost and with the convenience of instantly downloading them, there is no doubt they are here to stay.

PLACE YOUR ADS IN CONFERENCE PROGRAM

Highlight your presence at the 2012 IASD conference by advertising in the annual conference program.

Do you have a product or business to promote? Do you host a dream group? Are you an artist who would like to reach out to an international audience? Do you offer ongoing workshops? IASD currently boasts more than 90 published authors among its members. Is your ad included? Provide IASD with camera-ready artwork, or let us create your ad for you, for a nominal fee.

The IASD annual conference program is distributed to every attendee; it contains key information on events, a schedule of sessions and much more. Attendees constantly refer to the program on-site and save it for future reference, generating multiple impressions for advertisers. Not all conference attendees are IASD members, so advertising in the conference program increases your exposure.

IASD Member Discount! Don't delay - the deadline for ads and payment is May 10, 2012! For more information please visit: https://asdreams.org/2012/buyanad.html

Exhibitor Space Unavailable at 2012 IASD Conference

Due to space considerations, there will be no exhibitor tables available at IASD 2012 conference. We appreciate your interest and would like to recommend two possible alternatives:

Advertising space is available in the conference program at https://asdreams.org/2012/buyanad.html Most conference attendees look at this program many times each day. Make sure to provide a link to your products or services, especially since many attendees now bring their electronic devices to the conference.

Along with the conference book store, the conference recording studio, and the IASD products table, the conference will provide a literature table on which printed materials can be displayed. You are welcome to make use of this space.

Spotlight on BC, Canada
“It’s placed all its goodness into its seeds” (dream fragment heard).

At the age of 14 I awoke from a dream thinking how strange it was to leave this profound world for the mundane world. The dream world seemed, in my view, to be the primary world of existence. This vivid memory continues to inspire contemplation of world belief systems and cultures as well as dreams.

Walking the path of the visual artist has opened fascinating doors of perception. Dream symbols and narratives serve as the roots of many image concepts for my paintings, drawings and most recently a public art mosaic.

Since 2009, dreams have given my life a new dimension for exploration through the vehicle of co-creating a dream group. All participants maintain an open attitude toward a variety of interpretation tools from embodiment to art expression of dream characters. This dream sharing process has developed trust, bonding and personal growth for all.

Dream elements are interwoven within the group. For example, roses, a black dog or a name, was found in two members dreams the same week. As the group progresses, not only the personal but also timely calls from the collective consciousness are surfacing simultaneously.

Recently my dreams have been populated by the animal kingdom. The dreams promote learning about the creatures. From the Neolithic to the present day cultures, animals have been integral to our world. Through creative expression, my compassion deepens.

By Deborah Putman

From Membership Chair, Diane Rickards

Welcome to new IASD member Deborah Putman, visionary artist, for contributing to the Membership News this month. Dreams have been influencing Deborah from an early age, giving inspiration and messages that have deeply influenced her craft. Most recently, she is deepening her connections to the animal kingdom through her dreams. Deborah’s visionary work may be viewed at: www.deborahputman.com

This year my focus as membership chair is to bring forward dream news from IASD members who remind us that dreams are perhaps the most rudimentary yet elegant way that we have to remember and reconnect with ourselves, with the world around us and with other dimensions of existence.

During this season of greening and growth please encourage someone to join our dream community. Request brochures from the IASD office (office@asdreams.org) to pass along to others.

Attending to our dreams encourages an alignment and congruency of our life’s purpose with our soul.

IASD REGIONAL NEWS YOU CAN USE

Bear down - the 2012 IASD Berkeley conference is around the corner and regional meetings have set sail!

Berkeley Conference

Publicity about the IASD 2012 annual conference in Berkeley, CA will be promoted at various venues. Regional reps, please let us know if you are planning a regional meeting before the conference so we can include the announcement in our June Dream News. The regional reps annual lunch meeting at the 2012 Conference will be held on Monday, June 25.

Australia: Dreams and Imagination

A big thank you to all of our conference participants and presenters for contributing to the success of the first IASD Australian regional dream conference, “Dreams and Imagination: Healing Pathways,” held on the weekend of April 19-22 jointly with DreamNetWork Australia. The conference was lively, with good conversations, dream sharing and engaging and thoughtful presentations. We felt and heard from the people attending that it was a groundbreaking event for this region, and that there is a real desire to find ways to connect regionally and globally. The dreaming momentum that was given birth will continue to grow!

Toronto: Birth of a Region

“Whenever we try to create something and bring it forth into the world, our dreams use ‘the birth template,’ taking us from the preconception of that idea through to its infancy. Dreams contain both birth and creativity with insights on how the dream is birthing and gestating the idea.” Dr. Christopher Sowton.

Our group is thrilled to announce the good news! Reading this description was quite timely for me as we have recently ‘birthed’ the Toronto Region of the IASD.

At our first full day regional meeting on April 29, Christopher Sowton (2012 Berkeley presenter) facilitated an optional dream sharing group using the Montague Ullman method. Mostafa Dini shared his upcoming Berkeley Conference presentation, “Can Physical Explanations Help to Model the Brain Functions?” and our members provided helpful feedback. After a delicious potluck lunch, Carlyle Smith and Donna-Marie Newfield shared their presentation of ‘Heads-Up’ Dreaming, a fascinating topic of dreaming about events before they occur. It was a powerful, fun and engaging experience. Thank you, Claude Desloges (Montreal IASD regional rep) for your support.

We are committed to support regional members through opportunities for peer review, learning/honing facilitation skills, dream sharing and education through ‘already birthed presentations’. Have you had a birth template dream lately?

Toronto Regional Representative

Los Angeles: A Day of Dreaming

The Southern California region of the IASD had a successful conference: “A Day of Dreaming,” Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the First Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church in Whittier. This regional event was planned to give partial answer to the following questions: How might we build a dreaming community in the large “megalopolis” in Southern California, an area from Santa Barbara to San Diego? What would be the feasibility of small-scale programs, involving 25-50 people, perhaps just half a day in length?

Rev. Geoff Nelson
coordinated the regional IASD conference. There were workshops by Walter Berry ("DreamMaps: A Resource for the Understanding of Dreams."), Barbara Bishop (“Replacing Spirits with Spirit: Addiction, Spirituality and Dreaming") and Rev. Bonnie Tarwater (“Honoring Dreams as Sacred Gifts: An introduction to the integration of religious and psychological practices of dreams as shown through art work”). Athena Kolinski ("The Mythology of the Major Arcana: The Journey of the Fool") and Richard Paseman ("Dream Visitations of the Dead: Communion of Souls – Pillar of Dreams") offered panel presentations. A labyrinth was available in the large room for those who chose to make use of it.

The evaluations, though not thoroughly reviewed at this time, were favorable and quite enthusiastic. We have generated energy towards building the dreaming community in Southern California. Whether or not people attended this event, they were reminded of it and notified of other IASD activities, such as the June conference in Berkeley. And we determined that small, morning events, with just a few workshops and panel presentations are feasible. All in all, it was a favorable continuation of IASD-related activity in Southern California!

Switzerland: Waking up in the Bern Dream!

This year, the Swiss capital of Bern can also be called the European capital of dreams. This September, Bern will hold the 4th IASD European Regional Conference. Also, at the end of March, Bern hosted an exciting workshop on lucid dreaming led by the pioneer and leading figure in the scientific study of lucid dreams, Dr. Stephen LaBerge, accompanied by the event host at the University of Bern and lucid dream researcher, Dr. Daniel Erlacher, and a lucid dream educator from the Netherlands, Tim Post.

Over thirty people with an interest in lucid dreaming gathered from all over Europe to meet Stephen, a very infrequent guest on the old continent, to discuss the science and art of lucid dreaming. The workshop started with a motto “Wake up in your dreams!”, inviting participants to enhance awareness not only in their dreaming but also in their waking lives. Dr. LaBerge shared discoveries, observations and insights from the decades of his quest to learn more about lucid dreaming. Dr. Erlacher presented some of his research findings and showed a live demonstration of an actual sleep recording, while Tim Post provided plentiful practical advice on how to develop one's lucid dreaming ability. The informative and insightful two-day event passed like a lucid flash, yet awakening Europe for renewed awareness in dreams.
