Title of Work:  Blue Heron
Medium: Stained Glass
Date Created ( X )

This stained-glass window is a compilation of images drawn directly from a dream that was immediately followed by a synchronistic event. In the dream, briefly, I saw TWO herons on the nearby beach, at low tide. After years of heron-watching, I had only seen solitary herons, never a pair. It was quite early when I woke. The sun had not yet risen, and I drove to the beach. It was low-tide. I spotted a heron on the beach. For at least a half-hour I watched the bird as it slowly “spired and speared” along the water’s edge. As the sun approached the rim of the saw-tooth mountains in the distance, the heron stood in a direct line between me and the rising sun. As the first rays shot across the water, the heron lifted its head and shook the water off its beak, as if spilling droplets of liquid gold into the waters at its feet. At that moment I experienced a moment of eternity in time, a heron-sunrise epiphany.

In the course of the morning a second heron appeared.

There was much more to the event, but this much alone was enough to warrant a ritual enactment of the experience –in this case the enactment was carried out in stained-glass. The mummy standing in the lunar boat recalls myths of the Egyptian creator-god, Ptah, whose presence was evoked by the heron-sunrise experience.
