Title of Work: Pumpkin Soup
Medium:         Photoshop LE
Date:              Sunday, January 25, 2009

I make pumpkin soup and pour it back into the shell, then put the “lid” back on. The baked shell is kind of mushy and flimsy, but it looks sooooo delicious!

Gift: The fragility of the shell with delectable contents might have been a warning that I would learn about Frances Delgado’s death at Church.

Notes: Frances was, by all accounts that I heard, the best storyteller in the Pascua Yaqui community. I had so much to ask her, yet shyness held me back until it was too late. Anyway, she wound up as the recipient of my soup when I drew the picture (It's not a very accurate likeness, but I think I got her nature.) I felt like putting us in fiesta dresses. The flowers on the table are the traditional tissue-flowers that the community makes for fiestas. It's also traditional to strew flowers around the feast on Dia de los Muertos. The rosary in the background is a Yaqui-style rosary, with the equal-armed cross ending in a bright yarn tassel.
