Title of Work:     Black Superheroes, White Energy, Red Flames
Medium:             Pastel Oils on Paper
Date Created:     July 12, 2010

In February 2010, I dreamt I was walking across a lush green hilly landscape, a picture perfect Swiss countryside.  A “good” superhero accompanied me, but suddenly an “evil” superhero appeared, and threw a giant ball of powerful white laser-like fire-energy toward the village whence I came.  The good superhero and I could not do a thing - the deed was done.

Journeying in this Jungian terrain, I later realized that as I journeyed, even though I did not know where I was heading, the knowledge that I had come from somewhere gave me the certainty to go forward.  Now that that somewhere was destroyed, I was at a complete loss how to proceed.

Later, I sensed that the dream perhaps came to ask, what needs to be destroyed from the past in order to move forward?  Though I knew one is good and one is evil, both the superheroes are black and appear exactly the same, perhaps two aspects of the same whole.  The dream reveals another duality, the dynamic between seemingly perfect, verdant and “neutral” Switzerland and the small explosive Israeli village/state with which I have a love/hate relationship.  In alchemy and other teachings, duality is an expression of unity in our physical world, but of course it is only temporal.  From an alchemical standpoint, the black dual superheroes, the white ball of energy and the red flames of destruction can be seen as the color progressions of the first three stages of the alchemical process.
