GOOD GOOGLY: THE NEW IMPORTANCE OF GOOGLE+ FOR SOCIAL MEDIA

Ryan Hurd

It’ been over two years since my last Dreaming 2.0 column for dream professionals. But this is too important to not discuss: Google has entered the social media world and it may be the most important site ever for marketing yourself and your services online.

Why bother with another social site?
Google just wiped and reinstalled their Terms and Services from scratch (the mixed metaphor here is a delicious digital biscuit), essentially meshing their search engine, YouTube, and Google+ data together.

This means that the more popular you are in Google+, YouTube, and other Google services, the higher you will rank in their search engine for your key terms for your extended network. And of course, the more you’re found through the biggest search engine in the world, the more people buy your books, take your workshops.

No doubt about it, Google+ will be bigger than Facebook’s reach for finding your targeted demographic. The site is growing by 600k members a day. By the end of 2012, Google+ is estimated to have over 400 million members, which is only half the size of Facebook, but it’s growing 10 times as fast.

If I did math in my head, I’d be doing it right now and I’d be very impressed.

So what is Google+?
Google+ is a social sharing site that basically has the flexibility of Facebook for sharing media and the viral potential of Twitter for spreading your message far and wide. It’s pretty easy to get started and moreover is easy to find friends if you already use gmail.

A couple months ago, Google+ started allowing companies and organizations to have their own profile. Like Facebook, these new business profiles are called “Pages.” And as of two weeks ago, Google+ allows personal profiles to use nicknames rather than real names only. That’s good news for your non-profit, certification program...and Madonna.

Circle the Wagons

For both profiles and pages, Google+ spreads your favorite news, links and videos with a concept called Circles. Like Twitter, people can be in one of your circles and follow your updates without you having to reciprocate. You can therefore decide if you want to connect only with people you actually know (like LinkedIn is designed) or let yourself become an Internet celebrity by connecting far and wide.

You can then organize these people into separate circles like friends, co-workers, fans, and high school crushes. This is a great way to make sure your family doesn’t get all your marketing messages, and your fans don’t get overwhelmed with pictures of your new drooling baby (this example in no way resembles my situation).

Most of us will do something in the middle between connecting with only real friends and being a media maven. But if you are about to launch a new book promotion, or are looking for local Google+ users to find your workshop, the neighborly way is to be reciprocal.

Get Started

So here’s how to get your own personal profile for Google+ (recommended for authors, professionals or coaches whose name is their business).
http://plus.google.com/

And here’s how to get your own business page for Google+ (recommended for small businesses, institutions, certification programs, retreat centers, etc.).

MEMBERSHIP NEWS

Spotlight on Pennsylvania
Ryan Hurd, IASD Board Member and Chair of the Social Outreach and Networking Committee

Last month, I published a new digital kit called the Lucid Immersion Blueprint, which taps the deep reservoir of wisdom about lucid dreaming research from many sources, many of whom are IASD members. The Blueprint is a collection of ebooks, printable worksheets, and audio files designed to lead frustrated dreamers past their specific roadblocks to greater lucidity. Essentially, it's the guide to lucid dreaming that I needed twenty years ago.

The premise behind the Lucid Immersion Blueprint is really simple: Dreamers are more successful at inducing lucid dreams when they integrate the new science of lucid dreaming with ancient dream incubation techniques and modern dreamwork methods.

I am particularly grateful to IASD members Robert Waggoner and Chris Olsen, both of whom were kind enough to participate in lengthy interviews about ways to encourage "lucid living”; as well as Scott Sparrow and Kelly Bulkeley, who provided editorial feedback on the early drafts.

Lucid Immersion Blueprint is currently only available at DreamStudies.org, but I also have plans to offer the core material to ebook lovers at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iTunes. A print version will eventually hit the market, probably in early 2013.

Ryan Hurd is founder and editor of the blog DreamStudies.org, and a contributing writer for DreamTribe.com. He is also the author of Sleep Paralysis: A Guide to Hypnagogic Visions and Visitors of the Night (2011, Hyena Press). His articles about sleep and dreams have been featured on Business Insider, Reality Sandwich and Care2.com. You can follow him on twitter@ryanhurd

Membership Inquires

I regret that after assuming the duties of chair of the membership committee two months ago, Jennifer Parker was forced to step down due to pressing medical problems. However, she will fortunately be able to continue serving on the IASD board, and may yet be able to assume other duties as her medical problems subside. Our thoughts and prayers go to Jennifer for a speedy recovery.

In response to the need for a new membership chair, the executive committee has just appointed Dr. Diane Rickards of Vancouver. Diane is currently the regional representative of Western Canada, and a psychologist in private practice. She will be taking over the Membership News next month.

Please feel free to contact Diane or me at any time with membership questions or concerns. We always welcome new volunteers. You are the future leaders of IASD and we want your energy, help, and visions.

IASD REGIONAL ACTIVITY 2012

Most of you are familiar with our regional representative network and have read some or all of the wonderful “Spotlight on...” articles that have focused on IASD activities around the world. You may have noticed that the membership column that carried those articles has shifted to highlighting specific members’ lives and dream activities.

As regional activities of all sorts have grown we decided to present those events and developments in a section of Dream News dedicated to them. This section will include information about the regional representative network and regional events, both those already accomplished and those that are planned. We welcome your feedback on this new column and the topics presented. We hope it will inspire you as it does us to see what an amazing global dream community we are and how the international dimensions of IASD are expanding. Consider this an invitation to get involved, vicariously, or in person in your own region!

You may be interested in the following regional events planned for 2012 in Toronto, Canada; Sydney, Australia; and Berne, Switzerland.

Toronto, Canada Region is on the Map!

MaraZadnoff reports on the small and beautiful Toronto Regional:

On Sunday, January 29, 2012, seventeen eager dreamers and dreamworkers met in midtown Toronto for our inaugural Toronto regional organizational meeting.

Special thanks to facilitator and dreamer, Njeri Damali Campbell, for leading a fabulous brainstorming exercise that began with private reflection, followed by paired discussion and culminated in a large group exercise that brought forth a tremendous go forward model of ideas for the Toronto group.

Attendees envision a diverse and inclusive Toronto regional group that will provide: education, connection/networking and communication, visioning, showcasing and promotion, sharing of dreams within the group, and outreach. The group is in the process of creating more opportunities to share and exchange learning in the areas of dreaming, dreamwork and research.

Much appreciation and thanks to our guest speaker, Christopher Sowton, noted homeopath and naturopath and inventor of The Dreamreading Method. Chris led an informative and engaging workshop with an emphasis on how to move through dreamwork under time constraints and what that could look like using The Dreamreading Method as a tool. The presentation led to further discussion about the different styles of dreamwork used within our membership.

Thank you to everyone in attendance for contributing to our inaugural regional meeting. Our next meeting date is scheduled for Sunday, April 29, 2012. We look forward to Carlyle Smith and Donna-Marie Newfield sharing their dream presentation, “Heads-Up“.

Dreams & Imagination:
Healing Pathways IASD Regional Conference,
Sydney, Australia, April 19-22, 2012

Susannah Benson gives an update on the Australia Regional Conference, a co-sponsored event of DreamNetworkAustralia and IASD.

The call for submissions has closed, but early bird rates are still open until February 14. The conference program schedule will be posted on our conference website by February 5th. Please visit the site for the full details. Conference abstracts, and presenters’ profiles will be progressively added to the site. We hope you will agree with us that the program is exciting, interesting and has broad appeal. We are particularly pleased that the conference themes of dreams, healing and imagination have drawn proposals from participants in a number of cross-disciplinary fields, including ecology, science and the arts. Our keynote presenters are well known in the dream studies field: Kelly Bulkeley (video presentation); Robbie Bosnak; Jody Grundy. A keynote Australian presenter is David Tacey who will be speaking on “Aboriginal Spirituality, Ecology and a Sense of Place.” We have a dedicated art room, an interactive art exhibition, and an artist in residence, Peter Cameron, who will be facilitating a conversation around art and imaginal spaces. Our social program offers communal gatherings, storytelling, and music.

Visit www.dreamnetworkaustralia.com.au  for more details, to register, or to find out about volunteering opportunities. We look forward to welcoming you to the conference in April.

The Dream Connection:
Berne Switzerland, September, 2012
4TH IASD European Regional Conference

The Dream Connection: Fourth IASD European regional conference, will take place September 7-9, 2012 at the University of Berne, Switzerland. This event is organized by host Dr. Daniel Erlacher with the assistance of Olaf Gerlach-Hansen, Michael Schredl, Art Funkhouser, Tadas Stumbrys and others.

Dreams are nodal points that connect people. This connection is also apparent in the scientific world where different disciplines try to resolve the riddles of dreaming by scanning the sleeping brain or transcribing dream reports to find meaning in the content. Dreams connect philosophy, psychology, neuroscience but also education or sport. The conference will hopefully serve as a nodal point where different ideas about dreaming get connected.

The conference aims to have a wide range of papers and workshops on varied topics. These topics include cross-cultural studies, nightmares, lucid dreams, dreams and religion, women’s dreams, children’s dreams, dreams and education, using dreams for therapeutic purposes and dreams and creativity.br>
Keynote speakers include: Prof. Metzinger, Univ. of Mainz, Germany, Dr. Med Ralf Binswanger, Zurich, Switzerland; Dr. Lutz Wittman, Univ. Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland and others.

Watch for the call for presentations and further announcements in early February. For further information contact Dr. Daniel Erlacher: daniel.erlacher@ispw.unibe.ch

Announcement

We welcome and thank Claude Desloges , Montreal, CA who has taken on the job of linking regional reps with the members in their regions as they join or renew their IASD memberships.

IASD PLEDGE DRIVE 2011 OVERWHELMINGLY SUCCESSFUL

Thanks to the generosity of many IASD members, final figures for the 2011 Pledge Drive were close to three thousand dollars above our projected goal of $10,000, funds which will allow increased activity in several areas of IASD in 2012.

Huge thanks go to all of you who provide not only funds but hours of volunteer activity to support the role of dreams in the world.br>
One clear aspect of the 2011 Pledge Drive was the response to our request for funding an IASD web site upgrade. Over twenty members contributed amounts of $50 and $100 toward this work, bringing to almost $2,000 the funds that will be set aside for web upgrade purposes. Work on this project has already begun, with the development of a survey sent to IASD Committee Chairs, asking for input on their special website needs.

Other good news from the Pledge Drive includes the donation of $4,275 to the IASD Research Grants fund and $550 to the IASD Student Awards. Both of these funding categories are areas matched annually with a donation from existing IASD funds. This means that total funds devoted to Research Grant Awards in 2012 will be $8,550 and the total for Student Awards will be $1,100.

Other IASD programs receiving support from the annual Pledge Drive include the Nancy Brzeski Dream Art awards, conference scholarships, publications and the IASD General Fund.
